NFL Roger Goodell has conditionally reinstated former player Michael Vick after completing his 20-month jail sentence related to federal dog fight charges.

Vick will be eligible to play in the final two preseason games and the Commissioner will re-evaluate Vick’s status for regular-season games by week six. His reinstatement will be based on Vick following the NFL’s guidelines he will need to follow in his professional, personal and financial life.

Former Colts coach Tony Dungy will server as Vick’s mentor.
Vick is allowed to sign with any ball club and he eligible to any team activities and practices other than games before week six. The NFL will develop specific guidelines to govern Vick.

Goodell will reevaluate Vick’s status prior to Week 6.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) have not issued an official statement on his reinstatement yet, however a week ago, the organization said Vick should be psychologically tested before being considered for reinstatement according to a report on CBS 9News Now. PETA has also threatened to protest Vick’s return.

“Needless to say, your margin for error is extremely limited,” Goodell said in a letter to Vick. “I urge you to take full advantage of the resources available to support you and to dedicate yourself to rebuilding your life and your career. If you do this, the NFL will support you.”

The owners of the New York Giants and the New York Jets have already stated they aren’t interested in acquiring Vick.

Many have varied opinions on this issue. Should there be ethnical standards mandated and enforced by the sports organization (NFL, NBA, MLB and so on)? If a professional sports figure has served their time, is that enough? These are serious discussions that need to take place as more and more sports figures have legal troubles.
